Each jurisdiction adopts its own fire code: Greeley is on the 2021 International Fire Code,10 while Fort Collins, Timnath and the Poudre Valley Fire Protection District (Poudre Fire Authority's area), Loveland Fire Rescue Authority's area and Windsor Severance Fire Rescue's area are on the 2024 edition.111213 Compare the gate rules town by town.

What do people ask about driveway gates in Fort Collins?

It depends on the town and the work. In Fort Collins, fences up to 6 ft tall are exempt from a building permit; the city's exemption list doesn't name gates separately.14 A gate across a fire apparatus access road in Fort Collins also needs fire code official approval before installation.15

Angi puts typical automatic gate repair at $550 to $1,500, with an average of about $900 (May 2026). Angi says emergency or after-hours service may add $50 to $200.4

It depends on the operator's battery and one setting. On LiftMaster's LA400UL, when AC power is off and the battery runs critically low, the BATT FAIL setting latches the gate at a limit until power returns, and the option switch sets whether it opens and latches open or latches closed.16 The LA400 ships with two 7Ah backup batteries that keep the gate running through a power outage (LiftMaster).17

It depends on the fire authority. In Fort Collins, a single gate across a fire apparatus access road must be at least 20 ft wide.18 Windsor Severance Fire Rescue sets gates for one- or two-family dwellings at a 12 ft minimum width.19
