Swing or slide: which driveway gate fits?

Quick answer: It depends on the room beside the opening, the grade and the gate’s length and weight. A slide gate fits where the ground is level and there is room alongside the opening to store a cantilever leaf about 50% larger than the opening.¹ On LiftMaster’s residential ratings, the RSL12UL product page lists gates up to 25 ft and 800 lb for the slide operator,² while the RSW12UL swing operator’s weight rating falls with leaf length, from 1,000 lb at 6 ft to 400 lb at 16 ft.³

How much room does each gate need?

A slide gate needs room beside the opening. PalmSHIELD says a cantilever gate leaf is about 50% larger than the opening: a 24 ft opening takes a 36 ft leaf, and the extra 12 ft is the counterbalance tail. PalmSHIELD also says to check the site has room to store the whole leaf when the gate opens.¹ A swing gate needs its path kept clear: LiftMaster’s RSW12UL and LA400UL manuals say the gate must be installed so that enough clearance is supplied between the gate and adjacent structures when opening and closing, but give no distance.³⁴

Can a gate go on a sloped driveway?

It depends on the gate and the operator. LiftMaster’s LA400UL installation manual says: “DO NOT install on uphill or downhill gates.”⁴ PalmSHIELD says cantilever slide gates must be installed level, with the bottom at least 2 in above the highest grade point along the travel.¹ LiftMaster’s RSW12UL manual says the same in other words: ‘Gate MUST be level.‘³

Which handles a longer or heavier gate?

Going by LiftMaster’s ratings, its residential slide operator handles a longer gate than its residential swing operators: LiftMaster’s RSL12UL product page lists gates up to 25 ft and 800 lb,² while its RSW12UL swing operator is rated for 1,000 lb only at 6 ft, falling to 400 lb at 16 ft.³

LiftMaster’s LA400UL linear actuator is rated for gates up to 850 lb at 10 ft, falling to 550 lb at 16 ft, so a longer leaf has to be lighter on that model.⁴

Do swing and slide openers differ in the cold?

Not on LiftMaster’s residential ratings: the swing and slide models carry the same cold ratings. LiftMaster rates the RSW12UL and RSL12UL from −4°F to 140°F without a heater and down to −40°F with its HTR heater,⁵⁶³ and NOAA’s Fort Collins, Loveland 2N and Greeley UNC stations each recorded −17°F or colder between 2022 and 2024.⁷⁸⁹ The HTR cannot be used with a solar application on either model.⁶³ The cold-weather guide compares more models.

Does a slide gate need a separate walk-through gate?

Yes, on LiftMaster’s residential operators, swing or slide. The RSL12UL, RSW12UL and LA400UL manuals each say the operator is for vehicular passage gates only and that pedestrians must be supplied with a separate access opening.⁶³⁴ The RSL12UL manual also calls for two independent monitored entrapment protection devices at each entrapment zone.⁶

So which gate fits the driveway?

Choose from the site, not the style:

• A slide gate fits when the ground along the travel is level and there is room beside the opening for a leaf about 50% larger than the opening,¹ or when a single leaf would be longer than the 16 ft LiftMaster rates the RSW12UL for.¹⁰
• A swing gate fits when the leaf is short and heavy: LiftMaster rates the RSW12UL for 1,000 lb at 6 ft and 800 lb at 8 ft, falling to 400 lb at 16 ft,³ against the RSL12UL’s 800 lb.²
• Cold doesn’t settle it: LiftMaster rates both residential models the same, and both need the HTR heater to be rated below −4°F.⁵⁶
