Driveway cantilever gate: how much room does it need?

More than the opening itself. PalmSHIELD says a cantilever gate leaf is about 50% larger than the opening: a 24 ft opening takes a 36 ft leaf, and the extra 12 ft is the counterbalance tail. PalmSHIELD also says to check the site has room to store the whole leaf when the gate opens.¹⁰ Measure the fence line beside the opening before choosing a cantilever gate.

Slide gate on a slope: does it work?

Not for a cantilever gate on uneven ground. PalmSHIELD says cantilever slide gates must be installed level, with the bottom at least 2 in above the highest grade point along the travel.¹⁰ LiftMaster’s LA400UL linear actuator has limits too: its installation manual says: “DO NOT install on uphill or downhill gates.”⁸ Grade is one of the first questions in automatic gate installation.

When does a slide gate make more sense than a swing gate?

Going by LiftMaster’s ratings, its residential slide operator handles a longer gate than its residential swing operators: LiftMaster’s RSL12UL product page lists gates up to 25 ft and 800 lb,⁵ while its RSW12UL swing operator is rated for 1,000 lb only at 6 ft, falling to 400 lb at 16 ft.⁷ For longer commercial openings, LiftMaster rates the CSL24UL slide operator for gates up to 50 ft and 1,500 lb.⁹

Will a slide gate opener run in the cold?

With a heater, it is rated below the lows NOAA’s stations recorded in 2022–2024. LiftMaster rates the RSL12UL from −4°F to 140°F without a heater and down to −40°F with its HTR heater.¹ The Fort Collins record low, −41°F set in 1951, is colder than that heated rating.² The HTR runs on 110 to 250 Vac and cannot be used with a solar application,¹ so on solar the RSL12UL is limited to its unheated rating, −4°F.¹ The cold-weather guide compares models, and solar gate openers covers winter sun and batteries.

Does a slide gate across a fire access road need approval?

In Fort Collins, yes. Fort Collins’ adopted section 503.6 says the installation of security gates across a fire apparatus access road shall be approved by the fire code official, and installed gates need an approved means of emergency operation.¹¹ A single gate across a fire apparatus access road there must be at least 20 ft wide, or at least 12 ft where the fire apparatus access road is a divided roadway.¹²

Where its gate rules apply, Windsor Severance Fire Rescue sets gates for one- or two-family dwellings at a 12 ft minimum width, set back at least 30 ft from the intersecting roadway.¹³ The fire-access guide covers the other towns.

Can a slide gate opener also run a walk-through gate?

No. LiftMaster’s RSL12UL manual says the operator is for vehicular passage gates only, not pedestrian gates, and that pedestrians must be supplied with a separate access opening.¹ The same manual calls for two independent monitored entrapment protection devices at each entrapment zone.¹

What are the disadvantages of using a sliding gate?

The ones the sources name are space and grade.
